PlaneShift Policies
Here are the current Rules for PlaneShift, meaning what we expect from players. If you follow these guidelines, you will enhance your gaming experience a lot. The term "guidelines" implies that common sense should be used to evaluate situations that are at the border of one case or another. Aplying the Rules and all the work organised to provide the players with the best possible environment, is a job undertaken by several actors: the developers, the advisors, the forum moderators and the game masters. It has to be a good experience for everyone, and to achieve this goal any annoying behaviour will have to be dealt with. Disciplinary action may be taken against any player found breaching these rules, and this action will be decided with consideration for the gravity of the offense.
By playing PlaneShift, you agree to the following terms:
Roleplay Policy
Naming Rules
Rules of Conduct
Account Policy
All Other policies
In Character (IC) means to act, speak and behave like your character will do, not you as a player will do - also known as roleplay. An example of IC (In-Character) speech is: "Hello traveller, did you hear any news about Hydlaa these days?"
Out Of Character (OOC) is when you are speaking with a GM, or when you speak of any real life events/matters. An example can be: "GM, my client is acting strangely, is there a patch to fix it?"
Remember to act in-character as much as possible when talking to others! We are all working towards a Roleplay atmosphere in PlaneShift. OOC should be used only in /tell with a GM, in the help channel or in petitions. All other communications have to be IC. OOC text should be designated with brackets - [ ] - as regular text comes from the mouth of your character, who knows nothing about computers, video games, the internet, or Picasso. Read the Setting for official information about the world your character belongs to - and while your character can certainly come from another "plane" outside of it, don't do something outrageous like try to bring in "roleplay" guns. Keep with the medieval fantasy atmosphere as much as you can.
The game is about roleplay, so part of the rules are to encourage or "enforce" it as smoothly as possible. The freedom of everyone has to be respected as long as it doesn't come in the way of someone else's, with a priority on the RPG style. The name policy, the content of the dialogs and the online activities are concerned with this issue.
The language in-game is English. You may use other languages in private messages like /tell, or in guild chat. This allows all the players in the game to interact with each other regardless of where they are from - and prevents the separation of the community into groups based on nationality.
The first impression other players have of you will be based on your name, so it's best to start off on the right foot.
While choosing the perfect name for your character, guild, or pet is generally left to your discretion, we ask that you refrain from using certain types of names. These types of names are detailed in the categories below. If a name is found that violates these policies we will change the name and take further action if the name is inappropriate.
You may not use:
- Trademarked names of products, services, or concepts (e.g. Marlboro, Sony, Band-Aid).
- Rude, racist or ethnically offensive, defamatory or hateful, obscene, profane, or sexually explicit names, nor drug references and homonyms of these words, names that include common swear words, or refer to a part of anatomy.
- Names of religious, occult, political, or significant historic origin (e.g. Jesus, Allah, Satan, Stalin, Nosferatu).
- Non-fantasy oriented names from popular media. These names can be either fictional (e.g. Rambo, Darthvader, Flintstones) or non-fictional (e.g. Garth Brooks, Pierce Brosnan, Ronald Reagan, Michael Jordan).
- Fantasy-oriented names that are easily recognized from popular existing media (e.g. Merlin, Gandalf, Belgarath, Drizzt, Paul Atreides).
- Names containing titles within them, such as, but not limited to: The, Lord, Lady, Master, King, Queen, Knight, Sir, Father (e.g. Sirtallon, Lordeagle, Mothermaggy, Darksister).
- Common words and phrases that would not be found in the place and time setting of the game (e.g. Switchblade, Cell Phone, Phaser, Toaster, Truck, Anyone).
- Proper names from the PlaneShift world (e.g. Enkidukai, Tefusang, Yliakum, Akkaio). Guild names may use the proper names of places and creatures in Yliakum in order to faciliatate roleplay.
- Pure gibberish which consists of a string of letters that do not produce a pronounceable name (e.g. Asdfasdf, Jjxccm, Hvlldrm). In addition, letters should not be repeated more than twice in a row.
- Partial or complete sentences of multiple (generally more than 2) words strung together (i.e. Ownsyourworld, Ilikepancakes, Hellothere).
- Reverse spelling name that would be in contradiction with the Naming Rules.
- Word combinations that would result in a phonetically offensive name or that would go against the Naming Policy.
- A name chosen to harm, in any way, or impersonate another player or a member of the PlaneShift Team.
