A new PlaneShift release is out! You can find 0.3.017 in our download pages or you can use the updater included in your PlaneShift installation. Today Windows and Linux are available, MacOSX will be released in the next days. Mirrors are uploading the full distribution packages. Follows a list of improvements, some of which we still have to activate in game.

The new update 0.3.016 is ready! Update your clients to connect to laanx server. The full download package is available in our download pages. Here are the differences from 015 to 016:

Design and content:

Chat window updated, specific NPC tab, all visibile/audible messages moved to Main Tab, all detailed combat moved to system tab, combat details now only shown to user and group.
Added support for character helms. Added base set of helms, but few races still missing.
Mini-games system added, with ability to display a board, change pieces, configurable layouts.
Method of calculation cast success now set as a formula.
New animations added to complete the base set, few races still missing.
Added support for monsters variations
Added base armor for races. Kran has now a natural armor, monsters have various natural armors based on their race.
Item quality is now averaged on stacking.
Item resistance for crafted items set as 0.5

Bug Fixes:

Errors about unresolved item containers.
Many fixes and improvements to crafting.
Fixed crash if people tried to trade items while repairing them.
Pathing of NPC fixed.
Fixed stances of NPCs after respawn.

The new update is finally ready! Congratulations to the whole team for making this happen. The update was challenging to make because some technology changes were introduced, plus new levels and new features. You can find a detailed log of the changes here. Please note that only the windows version is available today, linux and mac will follow shortly.

We have prepared a new update for PlaneShift and we need some time to test it on the laanx server. For this reason the server will be down starting from this evening (few hours from now). The test will last few days, during which you will not be able to play PlaneShift.

The update brings some new features, new skins and some new outdoor terrain. You will need a new client to connect, that will be provided in the download section on bittorrent in the next days.

We are very happy to bring your attention to an interesting event that will happen on the 15th to 16th of July 2006. The event is not directly PlaneShift related, but is the first ever Crystal Space conference. Crystal Space is the 3d engine PlaneShift is using. We have been working closely every day with the CS team for 5 years, and at this point we consider it a sort of extended PS team. The event will be held in Aachen, Germany and Luca Pancallo - PlaneShift Director - has been invited and will be present as a speaker to talk about PlaneShift's future and new Crystal Space features that we would like to see implemented soon. After few days of testng the new version of PlaneShift client is available: 0.3.014b.

This is only the windows installer, in the next days we will upload also new MacOSX and linux distros.

Please notice that updater IS NOT ready yet for 0.3.014, so do not use updater for now, just use the full exe given above.

An option for the ones that downloaded the 014 preview version: just wait that updater is ready, and you will have to download only 40Mb.

Here is a list of what's changed from 014 to 014b:

Added more items to Harnquist smith shop and to Levrus alchemy laboratory for future crafting usage.

A preview of the new version of PlaneShift client is available: 0.3.014.

The laanx server has been reinstalled with newer operating system and newer applications. Thanks Fragnetics for their support.

The full exe downloads are now available for all platforms (win,linux,mac) on 5 different mirrors.

In the past weeks we also fixed all NPC dialogs. Every NPC in game now has proper base dialogs. We also fixed many bugs on quests, reaching a count of about 30 working quests.

Remember that quests are the biggest source of glyphs: spell casters don't wait anymore!

The current set of glyphs available in game through buying or quests is: Air, Armor, Arrow, Cold, Darkness, Energy, Fire, Hand, Lightning, Meteor, Might, Rock, Summon, Weakness.

We have been needing to do something to improve our recruitment process for a long time. The interest of the community is everyday bigger and many people want to apply for development. This requires a lot of time on our side to manage all the prospects, assign tasks, check progress and track the status of old ones. We decided to put an end to this by creating an application that handles all the prospect applications and tasks.

Not one, but two good news! First fragnetics fixed the server with the faulty hardware. Second a new client release is available!

You can get 0.3.013 from our download section. Please DO NOT RUN updater for now because the mirrors still have 0.3.012 version up.

Here is a list of improvements/fixes compared to 0.3.012 version:

New mental and physical stamina system
Many improvements to the GM system

Added money to mini inventory window. (trades, etc)

Labels will only show when in range to identify an object. (also helps performance by not drawing for far off objects) Dead objects now have red.

New updater system, which doesn't download the repository unless it needs to. This will help the bandwidth of our servers and those with slower connections.
Client can now automaticaly notify players when new updates are available, at the character selection screen.
Many fixes for the crafting system. We are close to have it working for real.

Temporarly removed advisor points scoring system to stop competitions. Advisor points are now on account, not on char.

Fixes to entity labels. Added command "/repaintlabels force" as a tool to repaint more severe problems if they still happen.

Many fixes related to items, inventories, and containers. Items shouldn't dissapear anymore, and weights should be handled without errors.
Better working configuration of keys and mouse buttons
Fixed many, many, memory leaks in both PS and CS. The client should be able to run without having to be restarted very often and should be more efficient in using memory.
Disabled invites while dueling, to prevent using them as a distraction to cheat
Changing weapons mid battle will make you skip a turn, to prevent some exploits
Fixed chat history to not loose current line by accident
Fixed bug where sound effects would try to load when sound was off
/who will only show up to 30 players based on the given filter, to fix issues with showing too many

Our server is currently down for maintenance. We experienced some problems that caused unwanted restarts. Fragnetics is investigating the hardware. Meanwhile we prepared for a new client release. It will be delivered as soon as the server is available again.

2006.02.03

In these days we experienced many problem on the server side, it was quite unstable. Most issues have been identified and it should be better from now on.

In the meantime we dedicated some time to improve the combat rules, after your comments about the stats (strength,...) not influencing much combat. We retested the whole system and come up with a solution that we deployed into the production server this morning. Now higher stats should make a lot more difference than before in the final damage resolution. The change took some time due to the number of features present in the system:

Every weapon category has different effect based on the armor type it hits. A broadsword will damage differently a chain mail armor compared to an axe.

When in combat you can change the "combat stance" to focus more on attack or defense.

At every hit the opponent can block your hit with his weapons, with his shield, or with his skills. We also have in place values for counter hit, giving a change to stop the counter attack. Each weapon type has different values.

Armor worn and other equipment counts also as maluses to your agility in combat, so wearing an heavy armor with little skill, will not protect you much, because you cannot move easily into the armor.

Many of these features are probably not so easy to identify, but are there and you can take advantage of those testing with different weapons and armors.

Let us know if the tweak we made to the rules are better or worst.
